Comparing Oticon Zeal and Oticon Intent for Bradenton Patients

Oticon Zeal and Intent share identical processing technology but differ in style—Intent is behind-the-ear, Zeal is virtually invisible in-canal.

Both the Oticon Zeal and Oticon Intent are strong hearing aids powered by the same Sirius chip and Oticon's BrainHearing technology — but they serve different needs. If you're weighing the two, the biggest difference comes down to style and fit preference, not sound quality.

What They Have in Common

Both hearing aids run on Oticon's Sirius chip and share the same core processing technology, including DNN 2.0 (Deep Neural Network) and MoreSound Intelligence 3.0. Both offer Bluetooth LE Audio, Auracast connectivity, hands-free calling, and up to 20 hours of battery life. Whether you choose Zeal or Intent, you're getting Oticon's most advanced AI-driven sound processing.

Oticon Intent — For Those Who Want a Traditional Fit

The Oticon Intent is a receiver-in-canal (RIC) hearing aid, meaning the main body sits behind the ear with a small receiver that sits inside the ear canal. It's Oticon's smallest Bluetooth RIC to date.

Intent introduced 4D Sensor technology, which adapts sound settings based on your head and body movement, conversational activity, and environmental noise. This is designed to improve speech comprehension in dynamic environments like restaurants.

It also offers four technology levels (Intent 1 through 4), giving you and your audiologist flexibility in matching the device to your hearing needs and budget. Recharging is fast — a full 2-hour charge delivers 20 hours of use, and a 15-minute quick charge gives you 4 hours.

One thing to note: unlike previous Oticon models, the rechargeable batteries in Intent cannot be swapped out at the clinic and would need to be sent to Oticon for replacement.

Oticon Zeal — For Those Who Want Discretion Without Compromise

Oticon Zeal takes a completely different approach to form factor. It's an in-the-ear (ITE) hearing aid — the world's most discreet complete hearing aid, according to Oticon — that sits fully inside the ear canal with no behind-the-ear component.

What makes Zeal different from traditional CIC (completely-in-canal) devices is its micro-encapsulation technology. The electronics are sealed in a solid, protective resin structure, making the device rechargeable, durable, and Bluetooth-capable — features that weren't previously possible in a form factor this small.

Zeal uses a unique 3-in-1 antenna that wraps around the ear, serving as a retention arm, extraction cord, and Bluetooth antenna in one. It's IP68-rated for moisture resistance and offers the same DNN 2.0 processing as Intent.

A practical advantage for new patients is that Zeal can often be fitted the same day using standard domes, with the option to move to custom micro-molds later. It fits approximately 2 out of 3 people with domes and can accommodate mild to moderately severe hearing losses with an instant fit.

Which One Is Right for You?

Here's a straightforward breakdown:

Choose Oticon Intent if you:

  • Are comfortable with a behind-the-ear style
  • Have a wider range of hearing loss levels
  • Want multiple technology tiers to choose from
  • Value 4D sensor-driven adaptability

Choose Oticon Zeal if you:

  • Prefer a hearing aid that's virtually invisible
  • Want a same-day fitting option
  • Have mild to moderately severe hearing loss
  • Want modern connectivity in a discreet package

Both are excellent options, and neither requires you to sacrifice sound quality for style.

A Note on Where You Get Fitted

Whichever device you lean toward, the fitting process matters. Over-the-counter hearing aids can amplify sound, but they aren't programmed to your specific hearing profile by a licensed audiologist. At our practice, Dr. Jill Diesman provides complete hearing evaluations and personalized fittings, taking the time to program and fine-tune your devices for both performance and comfort. Ongoing adjustments and follow-up care are part of the process — not an afterthought.
